Human Gait Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Human Gait?

A

May be defined as “ the translatory progression of the human body as a whole, produced by coordinated, rotatory movements of the body
segments”.

Why do we study the human gait?

A

As a foundation for analysing, identifying and correcting abnormalities in gait.

Q

what are the 5 main tasks for walking gait?

A
  1. Maintenance of support of head, arms and trunk.
  2. Maintenance of upright posture and balance of the body.
  3. Control of the foot trajectory to achieve safe ground clearance and gentle heel or toe landing.
  4. Generation of the mechanical energy to maintain the present forward velocity or to increase forward velocity.
  5. Absorption of the mechanical energy for shock absorption and stability or to decrease the forward velocity of the body.

Q

Function of the motion analysis system?

A

to track segment motion or generate 3D
anatomical coordinate data (to model several segment-body with
joint centres and centres of mass)

Q

What is a gait cycle?

A

The time interval or sequence of motions which occurs between two consecutive initial contacts of the same foot, i.e., from heel strike of the right extremity to heel strike again of the right extremity.

Q

Describe the 5 stages of the stance phase

A

Heel contact- Refers to the instant at which the heel touches the ground first.
Foot Flat- Refers the first point when the foot is flat on the ground, roughly at 7% of the gait cycle.
Midstance- When the entire body weight is directly over the supporting lower extremity, roughly at 30% of the gait cycle.
Heel off- When the heel is off the ground, roughly 40% of the gait cycle.
Toe off- When the toe if off the ground, roughly at 60% of the gait cycle.

Q

Describe the 4 stages of the swing phase.

A

Acceleration- When the toe leaves the ground and continue until mid swing.
Initial Swing- When the toe leave the ground until knee flexion occur.
Mid-Swing - From maximum knee flexion until the tibia is in a vertical position.
Deceleration- When the limb is decelerating, preparing for heel contact.

16
Q

5 examples of temporal variables?

A

Swing time, Stride duration, step duration, cadence, speed

17
Q

4 distance variables?

A

Stride length, step length, step width, degree of toe out

18
Q

What is stance time?

A

Amount of time spent during stance phase of gait cycle of one extremity.

19
Q

What is single limb support time?

A

Amount of time spent during a single gait cycle where only a single limb is supporting.

20
Q

what is double support time?

A

The amount of time where both feet are on the ground.

21
Q

what is swing time?

A

amount of time being spent during toe off to heel strike.

22
Q

what is stride duration?

A

amount of time spend for one gait cycle.

23
Q

what is step duration?

A

amount of time spent for one step.

24
Q

what is cadence?

A

number of steps per min/sec
shorter step length = higher cadence
if cadence increase, double support time also decrease.

25
Q

what is stride length?

A

the distance between the first heel strike to the next.

26
Q

what is step length?

A

The distance between two successive points of both ends of extremities

27
Q

what is step width?

A

The linear distance between the mid point of the heel of one foot to the same point of the other foot.

28
Q

what is degree of toe-out?

A

The angle of foot placement, is measured by each foot’s line of progression and a line which intersects the centre of the
heel and the second toe.
