BEMB Prosthetics Flashcards
What is a prosthesis?
It is an artificial device that replaces a missing body part which may be lost through a disease, trauma or congenital disorder.
What are the 3 types of prosthesis?
Below knee (Transtibial)
Above knee (Transfemoral)
Hip Disarticulation
What are the 3 basic components in a below knee prosthesis
socket, shank, foot
Function of a socket in a below knee prosthesis
Weight bearing feature to relieve stresses on tibial crest.
Function of a shank in a prosthesis?
A tube of alloy or titanium that attaches to the socket and foot.
What is SACH
Solid ankle cushion heel
Advantage and disadvantage of SACH
Advantages:
* No moving parts
* Requires little maintenance
* Good appearance
* Quiet in operation
* Manufacturability for different shoe heel height
Disadvantage:
Limited range of dorsiflexion and plantar flexion.
What does a Ideal prosthesis compromise?
It is a compromise of weight verses function.
Exclusion of features will cause excessive stress and an inefficient gait.
