BEMB Equilibrium Flashcards
what is torque?
The rotary effect of a force about an axis of rotation.
How is the moment arm of a force measured?
The moment arm of a force is measured between the perpendicular distance of a line of force, and the axis of rotation.
Where to torque occur in the human body?
Torque occur in the human body by the product of muscle tension and the muscle moment arm.
what do pitchers do maximise the effect of torque produced by the muscles?
They maximise the length of the moment arm between the hand and the total body axis of rotation.
What is mechanical advantage?
The ratio of the moment arm of the force (force arm) to the moment arm of the resistance (resistance arm) for a given lever.
What is static equilibrium?
A motionless state where there is no net force or torque acting.
What is centre of gravity?
The point in which a body’s weight is equally balanced in all directions.
What is the centre of gravity also known as?
The centre of mass.
Why is CG of interest in the study of human biomechanics?
It serves as an index of total body motion.
What is stability?
It is the resistance to disruption of equilibrium
What is balance?
The ability to control equilibrium.
What is base of support?
The area of contact between a body and the support surface.
What can increase a body’s stability.
Increasing body mass and friction between the body and surface of contact.
Increase size of the base in the direction of external force.
Vertically positioning the CG as low as possible
