Human Factors Flashcards
What is hypoxia? Symptoms?
- Lack of oxygen to the brain caused by insufficient supply, transport, or utilization
of oxygen - Visually impaired, unconsciousness, light headed, euphoric, confusion, blue
finger tips, giggly
How can you fix hypoxia?
- Supplemental oxygen
- Reduce altitude
- Emergency descent
At what altitude can you experience hypoxia?
- As low as 6,000 at night
- 10,000 typically
What is hyperventilation? When does it occur? What are the symptoms? What can you do to fix the issue? What would your response be with passengers?
When you’re breathing rapidly and you lose too much carbon dioxide
When it might occur: Higher altitudes can cause increased rate as well, stressed,
anxious
Symptoms: Quick breaths, lightheadedness, unconsciousness
Fix: Regain breathing rate, talk aloud, breathe into a bag
What happens to nitrogen in the bloodstream after scuba diving, and why is it dangerous for pilots? What are the symptoms of decompression sickness?
When you scuba dive you’re exposed to low pressure and nitrogen absorbs into your body. In a rapid ascent nitrogen can’t dissolves and forms bubbles in the body. The loss of rapid pressure can cause death. Called decompression sickness
