Human Evolution Hominids Flashcards
List the types of hominids
- Australopithecus Afarensis
- Australopithecus Africanus
- Australopithecus Boisei
- Homo Habilis
- Homo Erectus
- Homo Ergaster
- Homo Heidelbergensis
- Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis
- Homo Sapiens Sapiens
Australopithecus Afarensis
- Skull is similar to a chimpanzee, except for more human like teeth
- Still used to climbing in trees
Australopithecus Afarensis years
3.9 and 3.0 million years ago
Australopithecus Africanus
- Brain is a little larger than a chimp brain
2. They are not advanced enough to talk/speech
Australopithecus Africanus years
3 to 2 million years ago
Australopithecus Boisei
- Diet was mostly touch food that needed chewing
- Bones found with robust skeletons indicate they may have been used as digging tools
- Never been a serious candidate for being a direct human ancestor
Australopithecus Boisei years
2.1 and 1.1 million years ago
Homo Habilis
- Called “Handy Man” because there were tools found with remains
- Brian size is bigger than Australopithicus
- Might of been capable of small speech
Homo Habilis years
2.4 and 1.5 million years ago
Homo Erectus
- They walk upright
- Found in Africa, Asia, and Europe
- They used fire
- Stone tools are more sophisticated than the habilis
Homo Erectus years
1.8 and 300,000 years ago
Homo Ergaster
- The skeleton is very similar to a modern humans
2. The brow ridges differ in shape, and erectus would have a larger brain size
Homo Heidelbergensis
- Brain size larger than erectus, but smaller than most modern humans
- Teeth are usually less robust then erectus, but more robust than modern humans
Homo Heidelbergensis years
500,000 years ago
Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis
- Found throughout Europe and the Middle East
- Lived in cold climates
- Their body proportions are similar to those of modern cold-adapted people’s: short and solid, with short limbs
- Formidable hunters
- First people known to have buried their dead
Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis years
230,000 and 30,000 years ago
Homo Sapiens Sapiens
- Fine artwork appeared
- Wider variety of raw materials such as bone and antler
- Containing new tools for making clothing, engraving and sculpting.
Homo Sapiens Sapiens years
120,000 years ago
