Human Activites That Prodcue Climate Change Flashcards

1
Q

How is industry affecting climate change

A

Increased demand for consumer goods using a lot more for energy growth
Harlocarbons released from cement production

Q

How is energy production affecting climate change

A

Increase population has led to more energy used by burning of fossil fuels
Fossil fuels release co2 into atmosphere

Q

How is transport affecting climate change

A

Cars being more affordable and cheaper flights as huge quantites of fuels being used and release of nitrous oxide in atmosphere

Q

How is agriculture affecting climate change

A

Population has led deforestation and cleaning for cattle farming and deforestaion stops absportion of co2 which leaves co2 in atmosphere.
Cows release methane through farting into atmosphere

Q

Evidence of climate change caused by humans

A

Sea level-rose by 210mm and rising due to thermal exapnsion so warmer temp causing galciers to shrink
Global temperature- atmospheric temperature show a step rise from 1 degrees since 1880 and expected rise by 4.8 between 2005 and 2100
Arctic ice- extent of arctic ice in winter has decreased by more than 3% each decade over past 3 years.
Extreme weather-1950 has there been higher frequency of heat wave and rainfall records broken 2010-14

Q

Explain greenhouse efect

A

-Sun emits short wavelength infrared raditon enters atmosphere and travels towards surface
-gases in atmosphere naturally act like insulating layer- earth absorbs radiation but long wavelentgh radiation reflected back into atmosphere
- greenhouse gases cant absorb the radiation emmited by sun but can abosrb longer wavelength radiation.
-gases re-radiate energy and temeprature at earth surface rises

Q

What are the effects of climate chnage on environemnt

A

Sea surface temperature increase- beleaching corals and more cyclones
Melting ice-sea level to rise
Precipitation patterns
Changing distribution of species- malaria can inhabit more countries by mosquitoes

Q

Efects of climate change on people

A

Reduce food growth for farming as can’t grow crops in warmer conditions
Overcrowding as areas becoming too hot and dry to inhabit. Low-lying coastal areas could be lost to flood which could lead to migration and overcrowding of areas.
Affect health as there could be lower crop yield which can cause malnutrition, ill health and death
Can cause damage to houses as could get broken down

Q

How can low and maximun projections be used to see if climate change will go up or down

A

Human and physical reasons might affect is that countries may introduce child polocies meaning greater drop in population and countries might start using more renewable energy than others causing major drop.

Q

What are low and maximun emission projections and different scenarios

A

Can interpret how bad and how steadily temepratures are rising which can help us in future prevent how quickly the climate will rise

Scenario 1)this is best outcome, in which levels of greenhouse gases leak then reduce
Scenario 2 and 3) these are scenarios in which green houses gas levels continue to increase but eventually will level off
Scenario 4) worst outcome, in which rate production of emissions continues to increase and greenhouse gas levels end up very high

Q

What is thermal expansion and eustatic sea level rise

A

Water in ocean expands as it gets warmer and acientists think this accounts for about half of measured rise in sea levels.
Eustatic sea level rise-warmer temperatures causing glacierto shrink and ice sheets to melt causing sea levels to rise
