1.2 Natural Causes Of Climate Change Flashcards
Describe glacial and interglacial period
The quartenary period is most rcent geologicsl time period spanning about 2.6 million years ago to present
Before quaternsry period earths climate was a lot warmer and stable
Global tempersture shifted between cold glacial period that last for 100k years and warmer interglacial period that last 10k years
What is eccentricity
Orbit earth changes every 100,000 years sometimes orbit more circular and more elliptical
What is obquility
Earth slightly tilted on its axis and changes every 40k years meaning closer to sun and sometimes further
What is precession
Earth wobbles on its axis which affects differences in the season
How do asteroid collisions affect climate
When asteroids hit earth huge smount of dust particles it emits huge amounts of dust into atmosphere which can partially block solar radiation entering atmosphere fausing glacial periods
Gow does volcanic ativity affect climate
Golcanic eruptions can lead to huge amounts of ash emmited into atmosphere so some particles reflect eun rays back into atmosphere causing glacial periods.
How does solar output affect the climate
The sun output of energy isn’t constant it changes in short cycles of about 11 years and longer cycle several hundred years
Period when solar output is reduced may cause earyhs climate to be cooler
How can ice cores been used for evidence of climate
Each layer of ice freezes every year and ice scores have bubbles of sir which is analysed how much co2 each contain that year. This can learn about different tempreatures each year by measuring amount of co2 in water
How can tree rings be used as evidence of climate change
Each ring shows year of growth and changes in shape and size can show climate that year. Warme and wetter weather-tree ring bigger
Cooler and drier-tree ring is thinner
How can historical be used as evidence of climate change
Old photo, drawing, written records amd data can give us some evidence about recent climate
Earth climate evidence in past warmer and colder
Warmer-roman warm period-tree rings shows that england was warm enough to grow grapes
Colder- little ice age-paintings from 17th century show frost fair after river thames froze and was climate was 1 degree cooler than average temeprature in 2000.
