Q

Qunatitive test measuring emviornmental quality

A

• Systematic Sampling – measured on a main road in both areas and one N/S
street and one E/W street in both Boscombe East and Boscombe West.
• As a result we did 3 EQS in Boscombe East and 3 in Boscombe West.
• We measured 7 different factors: noise, greenery and open space, conditions od
housing, services, safety if alone, litter/graffiti/vandalism, traffic.
• We measured using a bi-polar scale between -2 (v. bad) and +2 (v. good) and had
a description of what a -2 and +2 would be.
• The best score for an area would have been +12 and the worst -12. We added up
all of the scores for the factors and found an average EQS for both areas.

Q

Qualititive test- perception of how quality of life was different in boscome east and west

A

• Systematic Sampling – before we went to each area we placed a dot in the
middle of the map of Boscombe East and Boscombe West.
• We then found the closest building/street to this dot and took the photo.
• We annotated the diagram with factors such as: house type, house density,
house quality, green space, traffic, proximity to services, air quality etc… as
we thought these would show us how we perceived.

Q

Binoolar survey sampling technique and sample size

A

Area choice: Stratified so we could
get two areas with different Q of L
(Quality of Life)
Location A,B,C choice: stratified
3 locations in 2 areas.
Total sample size: 6

Q

Bipolar survey strengths

A

Good to get average data when large
group is collected, this could avoid bias.
You are doing the data collection in the
area you are researching.
Straightforward to do and easy to
compare to different sites.

Q

Binpolar survey weaknesses

A

Very opinion based (you may have a
different idea of what a +2 is!
Time/date: less people around could be less
noise/traffic. Day time on a Monday, could
the area be different in the evening.
You are looking at one small area of a street
and may not get a full picture.

Q

Mood mapping-how does this method answer enquiry title?

A

Q3 How does environmental quality and housing quality differ between Boscombe West
and Boscombe East?
It can help build up a picture of how the place you are visiting feels and allows for
comparisons of different areas to be made.

Q

Mood mapping-strengths and weaknesses

A

Strengths-If the same person is doing all the sites
then the data is more reliable as they will
feel the same.
Gives a ‘feeling’ for the area, something
that quantitative data (numbers) cannot
do.
Weaknesses-Very subjective!!
Depending on how you’re feeling
during the day you may change your
emotion. E.g. if you are hungry may
feel lower energy.
Your mood changes throughout the
day.
Qualitative data so difficult to analyse.

Q

Conclusion

A

-primary data backs up secondary data-shows big gap quality of life between both areas
-average EQS shelley park was +1.5 compared to -0.15 in bsocombe west(between max score -2 and +2) environement better 5/7 factors we measured in shelley
-bwocmbe scored worse for building wuality, litter and vandalism and safety due to high density terraced housing and lots of buildings been built there.
- Boscombe west bad building quality-damage to bricks and windows, no parking space, houses on road, poor health for people from polution air and noise and low wealth.
-shelley park low density detached houses, good parking and more green

Q

Quantitive data alternatives for method

A

-5 or +5 scoring
- not having 0 as middle point
-use a noise meter on our phone
-we could have done/used traffic count to get data

Q

Qualitative alternative for method

A

-use different people to undertake the same task
-complete questionnaires to find out residents views as rund down areas can have excellent community spirit and places to live.
-phoy isnt full picture
