What is a niche market?
A smaller specialist market.
What is a fanchise?
When a business wants to buy another business’s products or services under their name
What is meant by commission?
The amount of money paid to an agent for every sale they make.
What is a VISA?
A travel document that gives permission for a traveller to enter or stay in a country for a certain amount of time.
What is meant by a transfer?
The transport provided in a package holiday from the airport to accommodation and back.
What is an excursion?
A short trip taken as a leisure activity.
Self-service check in desk
Used at airports, international railway stations and hotels.
What is a global distribution system (GDS):
System used by travel industry to sell flights, hotels, travel services.
What is meant by local factor?
A measure of airline performance. Shows % of seats filled. High load factors are good.
What is dynamic packaging?
Where customers put together their own package (that is likely protected by law) from different flight and accommodation options.
What is a principle?
An operator who creates the product to sell – airlines, hotels, ferry operators, visitor attractions.
What is the ATOL scheme?
Bond scheme that protects customers when buying package involving air travel in event of travel company failure.
What is the DMO (Destination Management Organization)?
Promotes tourism in a specific destination.
What is meant by a multiple?
A large nationwide chain of travel agents. E.g., TUI
What is meant by a miniple?
Small chains that are often located in a particular region.
What is meant by independent?
Often small, family-owned or partnerships. Likely to be found in smaller towns where rents are cheaper.
What is the package holiday directive?
Sets new definitions and laws for selling to protect the customer
What are distribution channels?
Ways in which businesses and organizations get products to customers. This can be either direct or through another organization.
Hotels
Can be independent or part of a chain, a type of catered accommodation. Range from budget to luxury. Services and facilities vary on quality of hotel. Cater for both leisure and business customers. For example, Travelodge and Hilton.
Ski-chalets
Specialised for skiing holidays. Can come services and unserviced. Owned by locals who clean and provide catering. Is catered accommodation.
Youth hostels
Very basic shared rooms. Cater for those on a lower budget. Many in Britain owned by the Youth Hostel Association (YHA). Is catered accommodation
What is self-catered accommodation?
All cleaning and cooking done by the customers. They include cabins, static caravans, towed caravans apartments, yurts (posh tents), teepees, cottages, AirBNB, tents, canal boats etc.
Visitor attractions
Important for domestic and inbound tourism. Purposes are education, leisure, recreation and entertainment.
Examples of visitor attactions.
Purpose-built attractions: Museums, galleries and national parks etc
Historical/heritage attractions: Stonehenge, Tower of London and Hadrian’s Wall etc
Sporting/special events: British Grand Prix, World Cup and Music Festivals etc
What is meant by binaural and haptic?
Binaural is the use of multiple microphones to create 3D sound effects. Haptic is relating to sense of touch.
