Types of HRT
Continuous combined - oestrogen, Premarin and MPA
Sequential combined - oestrogen and Premarin every day, add MPA for days 14-28
Oestrogen only
Risks of HRT
Increased risk of VTE, MI and stroke
Increased risk of breast cancer
Increased risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer in ERT
Benefits of HRT
Symptoms relief e.g mood swings, hot flushes, vaginal dryness, dyspareunia
Protects against CV disease and osteoporosis
Who is given sequential HRT
Women still having vaginal bleeding
Other treatments for menopausal symptoms
Oestrogen pessary - don’t need progesterone because low systemic absorption
For hot flushes - venlafaxine (SNRI) and clonidine (alpha agonist)
For low libido - testosterone off license
