Define
Meaning: To specify meaning
To define, the student will have to set out WHAT the meaning of a word or IS.
Describe
Meaning: To set out characteristics
To describe something, the will need to set out the characteristics of the subject. The higher the level of relevant detail, the higher the grade achieved.
Comment on
Meaning: To state facts and give details on a given subject
These types of questions will combine DEFINITION and DESCRIPTION of the subject along with IDENTIFICATION of what it is used for.
Explain
Meaning: To give reasons (explain why) or to describe something so that it can be understood (explain how)
To explain something, the student will need to explain clearly and in detail ‘HOW’ or ‘WHY’ things work or came the way they are. There needs to be a clear connection between the description and the reasoning (‘why’ or ‘how’) this can best done by using connecting words such as: because, therefore, as a result…
Apply
Meaning: To use relevant knowledge in a new context
‘Apply’ is used in all different kind of questions, it includes giving reasons, how and why.
Compare
Meaning: To identify similarities and differences
- Identify what is going to be compared
- Describe and explain what they have in common
- Describe and explain what they are different.
Evaluate
Meaning: to judge the strengths and weaknesses and justify decisions.
