How to do a reflection:

  1. reflect horizontal
  2. transparency panel: make mask
  3. ‘Make Mask’ (no throughway) + click ‘Clip’
  4. mask in panel is selected: create rectangle covering reflection
  5. apply gradient to mask

pen tool tricks

  • duck the hard bits
  • using Curvature Tool*

  1. Curvature Tool
  2. Hold down Alt
  3. Draw straight lines
    1. peaks and troughs
  4. CT pulls down lines
    1. create additional pts if needed
  5. Alt + Shift = perfect half circles

CT is intuitive, and will try hard to create a smooth transition between two newly created points.

celtic knot, the quick way - forget concentric circles:

this creates the equivalent of an outline stroke, with fill and stroke.

  1. draw a splash of brushes
  2. place text on top
  3. Pathfinder fly-out: ‘Make Compound Shape’*
  4. Select all, right-click + ‘Make Clipping Mask’

* this allows editing the text after clipping mask has been applied.
