How Science Works :). Flashcards
What’s science about?
Seeking and gaining knowledge about the world around us
How do scientists gain knowledge?
Asking questions and suggesting answers and testing them to see if they’re correct (scientific process)
Scientific process
Ask question
Suggest answer
Make prediction or hypothesis
Carry out a test
What does science try to do?
Explain how and why things happen answering questions
Where are results published?
In scientific journals
Scientific reports
Undergo peer view if conclusion reasonable is published (quality control). Can’t guarantee its correct other scientists need to reproduce it. Sometimes mistakes made, peer view not perfect
Other scientists test theory?
Repeat exact same experiment
Using theory to make new predictions and test new experiments
If world gives good evidence?
Consisted fact but never indisputable. Scientific breakthroughs or advances could provide questions to test theory lead to new evidence conflicts with current. Testing starts over
Evidence from lab
Controlled experiment in labs great, easiest place to control variances so kept constant so meaningful conclusion
Well- designed studies
Things can’t be investigated in lab. Try to make it valid so very hard to control all variables that might have an effect. Can have control
Society decisions
Scientific work leads to important discoveries benefit humankind used by society to make decisions. All sections of society use it
Three other factors affecting decisions?
Economic
Social
Environmental
Describe economic factors on decisions about science or the way science is used?
Society has to consider cost of implementing changes based on scientific conclusion
Scientific research is expensive so companies won’t always develop new ideas
Example of Society has to consider cost of implementing changes based on scientific conclusion
NHS can’t afford the last expensive drugs without sacrifice something else
Example of Scientific research is expensive so companies won’t always develop new ideas
Developing new drugs is costly so pharmaceutical companies often only invest in drugs that are likely to make them money
