The role and influence on attitudes to empire of Joseph Chamberlain?
Administrator (former Secretary of State for the Colonies):
Acknowledged British decline in industrial and military spheres as emerging nations challenged British dominance but believed that effective use of Empire could sustain British prosperity and prestige
Had a sense of imperial duty: “I believe that the British race is the greatest of the governing races that the world has ever seen.”
Campaigned for tariff reform to convince British public of the need for duties of foreign goods (including food) to give colonies an imperial preference and access to a duty-free British market - believed that trade with colonies would benefit Britain by reducing unemployment

Administrator (Former PM of the Cape Colony):
Secured PM of the Cape Colony (SA) in 1890 with a drive that British civilisation and control were key to the betterment of the world
Had hope to establish British rule from north to South of Africa, the Cape to British-dominated Sudan and Egypt
Resigned following the 1895 Jameson Raid (attempt to bring the Transvaal under unofficial British control)
