How Directional Planes Move Flashcards
What movements occur in the Sagittal plane?
Forward and Backward Movements Flexion and extension types of movement occur in this plane, eg kicking a football, chest pass in netball, walking, jumping, squatting, bending forward and extending back from the hip. -bicep curl -tricep extention -lunges -
Sagittal plane - a vertical plane that divides the body into left and right sides.
Sagittal plane
- divides the body into left and right halves.
- a vertical plane that divides the body into left and right sides.
- the sagittal suture in the top of the head.
why is squatting a sagittal movement?
The sagittal plane cuts through the center of the body, so the motion is front to back or back to front, including straight forward running. Squats involve flexion (forward motion) and extension (backward on the way up), so would fit into the sagittal plane.
Frontal/Coronal Plane
Anterior -front of body
posterior - back of body
What movements occur in the Frontal/Coronal plane?
lateral or side movements that move towards or away from the mid-line/median line/midsagittal line.
- abduction (abducting limbs from the trunk)
- adduction (returning limbs from the trunk)
- elevations and depressiong of the scapular (star jumps) on the frontal plane
What movements occur in the Frontal/Coronal plane?

- abduction (abducting limbs from the trunk)
-adduction (returning limbs from the trunk)
-elevations and depression of the scapular (star jumps) on the frontal plane
jumping jacks/star jumps - abduct and adduct lims from trunk and elevates and depresses the scapular in the shoulders - ALL IN THE FRONTAL PLANE.
2. LATERAL FLEXION (bending at the hip the trunk/torso left to right
What movements occur in the Tranverse plane?
dvides body top and bottom halves
anytime you rotate a joint in occours in the tranvese pane
rotation a joint
movements such as
rotation
pronation
supanation
so turning leg out and in
twisting spine at waist
flexing elbow and windscreen wiping forearm and hand into and away from the body.
