Q

How do the Lords use committees?

A

Lords also form expert committees who unpick bills and main purpose is to scrutinise new government legislation. This is often considered effective as they are not influenced by a political party and due to their professions are deemed very good at assessing proposed new laws.

How are the Lords seen to be independent?

A

Although Lords might belong to a political party they are not tied to that party like MPs in the House of Commons. Some Lords are known as “crossbenchers” which means they don’t belong to any political party and can be more independent.
