Q

How is water resistivity tested?

A

In using the tester, be sure that the tube is completely filled with water and that there is no bubbles to cause an erroneous reading.
The outside of the tube should be wiped dry before inserting it in the tester. Check the chart to determine resistivity.

8
Q

How is Water Purging performed?

A

Prior to washing hot insulators, enough water should be discharged from the nozzle to get the hot water out of the hose.
After you signal the driver to turn on the water, point wash gun down and away from all insulators. Pull trigger and allow stream of water to clean all rust and dirt that may be trapped in pipes. If water comes out a brown/copper color, keep spraying until water is clean and clear.

19
Q

At what range should a compact stream of water reach with a nozzle in good condition and no wind?

A

20’

20
Q

What happens beyond a 20’ stream?

A

It will break into spray

21
Q

Why do we prefer a stream?

A

It is more effective in washing contaminants from the insulators and can be directed with better accuracy to avoid wetting adjacent insulators.

22
Q

What additive can be used as directed by Methods Engineers?

A

Poly-Ox (Slick Water) will increase the effective washing distance by keeping the stream of water compacted.

23
Q

When can Slick Water be used?

A

Only on insulators on transmission lines routed through uncultivated and undeveloped areas where the structure height is above the range of normal peashooter range.

24
Q

How are communications made between lineman and the pumper truck?

A

Hand signals

25
Q

What are the two key hand signals used?

A
  • Begin Hot Washing: Tap the tower three times

- Hot Washing is Complete: Wave arm in an arc

26
Q

How else may communications be made?

A

By Radio

27
Q

How should a wash gun and whip hose be sent to the lineman?

A

On a handline, inside the tower with the hose properly coiled and snapped together.

28
Q

How should a lineman carry the hose and gun up the tower?

A
  • The lineman shall insert the handle of the gun in a belt loop (trigger may go in adjacent loop), and then coil the hose around the gun in small coils so that the hose may not become dislodged. secure the end of the hose to an eye on the gun with the snap provided.
  • With the gun in a belt loop position, the hose may be coiled over the opposite shoulder. Attach the end of hose to the eye on the gun with the snap. The lineman shall never carry the hose on a tower without the end being safely secured.
29
Q

What is required when washing 220kV contemporary towers with a wash gun?

A

To secure the quick coupling device to the valve stem by the use of an additional snap.

30
Q

How are insulators washed?

A

For 30 seconds and remain in the truck for one additional minute to observe the drying process.

31
Q

What should be done if a power arc is starting?

A

The insulators shall be rewashed for an additional 30 seconds.

32
Q

What should/shouldn’t be done while washing insulators?

A

No person shall get on or off the truck or tower or contact the truck or tower while standing on the ground during the washing or drying period.

33
Q

How do you wash 500kV Flat Towers?

A
  • If Heavy Contaminants: Wash from phase level first, the proceed to bridge level
  • If Moderate Contaminants: Wash from bridge level
  • Pay attention to wind direction
34
Q

How do you wash 500kV Vertical Towers?

A
  • If Heavy Contaminants: Wash bottom phase from phase level first, especially if “i” strings on dead-end towers
  • If Moderate Contaminants: Wash from bridge level, making sure to wash contaminants from arm steel
  • Pay attention to wind direction
35
Q

What do you look for when inspecting insulators after they’ve been washed?

A
  • Be sure a path of contamination has not been left, especially opposite the direction of wash.
36
Q

What do you inspect after washing insulators on a wooden structure?

A

Look for burning and all bonds should be visually checked for broken, loose connections, etc.

37
Q

What is done in case of an emergency when washing distribution facilities?

A

Emergency action should be taken to correct any damage, and the district concerned notified immediately.

38
Q

How should single unit post or pin-type insulators on a 33kV or above line that cannot be de-energized be washed?

A

With special care. If there is no other way to clean these insulators, they should be washed when the line load is such that a minimum system disturbance will be caused in case of a flashover.

39
Q

What usually forms around the insulator during hot washing and what is happening?

A

A blue corona will form and will continue until the heat of the leakage current evaporates the water. There will be considerable buzzing during washing operations.

40
Q

What should be done if loud buzzing continues for more than one minute after washing?

A

The insulator should be rewashed

41
Q

What happens if a yellow flame starts?

A

A power arc is forming which should be knocked out with a stream of water before it develops into a flashover. The insulator on which a yellow flame starts should be rewashed immediately.

42
Q

What leg are steps installed on?

A

The A-Leg

43
Q

What leg are steps on from the waist up?

A

The C-Leg

44
Q

What problems may make climbing steel difficult?

A

Bird waste, wet steel, loose steel and loose steel bolts

45
Q

What is a pumper tanker?

A

It is used to hot-wash insulators on transmission tower, it contains a tank of water and a pump that connects to a spigot at the base of the tower.

46
Q

What should a Pumper Tanker always carry?

A
  • Bottle of Cat Oil; make sure all 3 reserves are filled
  • Bag of Drizit
  • Rags
  • Box of #55 Locks
  • Safety Kit
  • Sprain Kit
  • Emergency Kit
  • Box of “O” Rings
  • Water Fittings for Pumper Towers
  • Long Orange Ground
  • Ladder
  • Fire Extinguishers
