Guying Flashcards
What is a Down Guy used for?
Most commonly used at the ends of pole lines to counterbalance the pull of the line of conductors.
What is a Down Guy connected to?
An anchor buried in the ground.
Where are guys often found?
Dead-Ends and corner poles where the lines change direction
What is Guy composed of?
Seven galvanized steel wires of a corrosion-resistant material.
What are the three most common guys?
- Down Guy
- Span Guy
- Sidewalk Guy
What is a Sidewalk Guy?
A Down Guy that is used to ensure sufficient clearance fo. a pedestrian walkway or other obstruction beside the pole.
How is a Sidewalk Guy composed?
Similar to a Down Guy, including a Queen Post, which is a 2” galvanized steel pipe mounted horizontally on the pole.
What is a Queen Post used for?
Holds the lower part of the Guy nearly vertical so that the guy does not create an overhead hazard where it crosses the walkway. OR to hold the guy away from other structures on the pole.
What is a Span Guy?
A Span of Guy from pole-top to pole-top.
Why is a Span Guy used?
To remove the strain from the line conductors. The Span Guy transfers the strain on a pole to another pole or structure.
How is the Length of the Guy required determined?
Based on the height of the Guy attachment on the pole and the distance from the base of the pole to the Guy Anchor.
What is the equation for determining Guy length?
Guy Length = Height of Attachment + 1/2 the Lead
What does a Span Guy Assembly require?
- Guy Attachment with Bolt and Washer
- Thimble Eye and Bolt
- Preform Dead-End
- 9/32” Guy Wire
- Guy Strain Insulator (Where Require)
What tools are needed to install a Span Guy?
- Hoist
- Grip
- Nylon Sling/Shackle
- Hand Line
- Guy Cutters
- Drill
- Hand Tools
- 100’ Measuring Tape
When would two Guy Insulators be needed?
On 33kV Circuits
