Which do you typically see diarrhea in, FOALs or ADULTs?
ADULTS
Which gut most often implicated in horse diarrhea?
CECUM and COLON
What does the large colon do?
STORE Electrolytes and Water; ABSORB electrolytes and water
What is clin path of diarrhea in horses?
Dehydration
Acidemia (bicarb loss)
Hyponatremia, Hypokalemia (E+ loss)
TP and Alb dec.
Infectious causes of diarrhea in horses?
Salmonella, Clostridial, PHF, Corona, Endoparasites
Toxic causes of diarrhea in horses?
NSAIDs, abx induced, Cantharadin
4 forms of Salmonellosis
- Subclinical
- Acute Diarrhea/endotoxemia
- Sudden Death
- Septicemic Foal
What makes you think of subclinical disease?
Foal got mildly sick then better. Later on, horses on the farm getting diarrhea/endotoxemia and the other forms.
Clinical signs of acute diarrheal salmonellosis?
TOXIC Line on MM
CBC: Neutropenia and Left Shift
Endotoxic Shock: Cold Extremeties**
Fibronecrotic typhlitis (rectal palpation)
How do you DX Salmonella?
Fecal Culture and PCR. PCR is better. Want more than one sample.
Culture is not that reliable, must be done 5x and still not considered neg. if nothing grows.
How do you TX acute diarrhea?
Fluids, Electrolytes, Abx, Endotox and Laminitis Therapy
