Hormones Flashcards
Cortisol
Endocrine Gland: Adrenal Cortex
Action: Increases gluconeogensis, FFA mobilization and protein synthesis; decreases glucose utilization
Controlling Factors: ACTH
Stimuli: same as ACTH
Exercise Effect: increased heavy exercise, decrease light exercise
Aldosterone
Endocrine Gland: Adrenal Cortex
Action: increases potassium secretion and sodium re-absorption at kidney.
Controlling Factors: plasma potassium concentration and renin-angiotensin system
Stimuli: low blood pressure and plasma volume; elevated plasma potassium and sympathetic activity to kidney
Exercise Effect: positive linear
Insulin
Endocrine Gland: Pancreas
Action: increases glucose amino acid and FFA uptake into tissues
Controlling Factors: Output of baroreceptors: glucose receptor in hypothalamus: brain and spinal centers
Stimuli: low blood pressure and blood glucose ; too much stress emotion
Exercise Effect: positive exponential
Glucagon
- endocrine gland: pancreas
- action: increases glucose and FFA mobilization; gluconeogenesis
- controlling factors: plasma glucose and amino acid concentrations; autonomic nervous system.
- stimuli: low plasma glucose and amino acid concentrations; elevated epinephrine and norepinephrine
- exercise effect: decreased smile effect
Testosterone
- Endocrine Gland: Testes
- Action: Protein synthesis; secondary sex characteristics; sex drive; sperm production
- Controlling Factors: FSH and LH (ICSH)
- Stimuli: Increased FSH and LH
- Exercise Effects: Small increase
Estrogen
- Endocrine Gland: ovaries
- Action: fat deposition; secondary sex characteristic; ovum development
- Controlling Factors: FSH and LH
- Stimuli: Increased FSH and LH
- Exercise Effects: Small Increase
