Homeostatis Flashcards
Name 4 things you have to keep constant in the body
- Temperature
- Water content
- Ion content
- Blood sugar levels
What two things does your body need to get rid of?
- Carbon dioxide (from respiration)
- Urea (from liver and breakdown of amino acids)
What happens if your body gets too hot?
Enzymes denature and reactions are disrupted
What is in the thermoregulatory centre in the brain?
Receptors that are sensitive to blood temperature in the brain
What gets sent to thermoregulatory centre in the brain?
Impulses from skin about skin temperature
What does your body do if it gets too hot?
1) Blood vessels dilate, sending more blood to the skin, where heat can be lost
2) Sweat is produced, which takes heat energy from skin to evaporate
What does your body do if it gets too cold?
1) Hairs stand up which traps a layer of insulating air
2) Blood vessels constrict, which reduces blood sent to the skin so heat is conserved
3) Muscles shiver, which causes respiration, which releases energy
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of constant internal conditions
