What does artificial blood do?
A
Gives patient time to produce new blood cells so no blood transfusion is needed

What are the advantages of an artificial heart?
A
- Aren’t rejected by body (plastic/metal)
- Temporary fix whilst donor being found
- Mechanical valves easier to fit

What are the disadvantages of an artificial heart?
A
- Surgery is dangerous and difficult
- Parts of heart wear out and motor could fail
- Can cause blood clots so patient has to take drugs to prevent this

What are stents?
A
Used if arteries narrow and blood flow is restricted

What are the advantages of using a stent?
A
- Keep arteries open
- Prevent heart attack

- Artery can narrow again over time
- Can cause blood clots so patient has to take drugs to prevent this
