homeostatis Flashcards
what does homeostatis mean?
constant internal enviroment
things that need to be kept the same so your cells keep running?
bodily levels:
1)ion content 2)water content 3)sugar content 4)temperature
where is ion content controlled ?
THE KIDNEYS
1) ions are taken in by food then absorbed in the blood
2) if theres too much ion(salt) it’ll need to be removed
3) some ions will be lost in sweat
4) the kidneys will then remove the excess from the blood, usually through urine.
how is water lost?
1) THROUGH THE SKIN AS SWEAT
2) VIA THE LUNGS THROUGH BREATH
3) VIA THE KIDNEYS THROUGH URINE
where is body temperature controlled?
the brain works as your bodies own thermostat
how are sugar levels are controlled?
1) eating foods with carbohyrates puts glucose into the gut
2) Metabolic rate usually removes glucose from the blood but if someone does TOO much exercise then too much is removed.
3) insulin helps to maintain the right amount of glucose, so your cells get the right amount of energy
