what are bacteria?

A

very small cells, they make you feel very ill by: 1. damaging your cells. 2. producing toxins

what are viruses?

A

they are not cells but they are tiny
they replicate themselves by invading your cells and copying themselves, the cell will usually burst releasing the new viruses. this cell damage is what makes you feel sick

what does your body do to protect itself?

A

skin, hairs and mucus in your respiratory system.

skin: platelets clot any cuts so pathogens can’t get in.

what do white blood cells do?

A

they engulf foreign cells and digest them.
they produce antibodies
and they’ll then produce antitoxins for the bacteria

what is a vaccination?

A

when being injected with small amounts of dead microorganisms which carry antigens; so then your body can find the right antibody to fight it off. So if the microorganism comes again your body can fight it off easy.

pros of vaccinations?

A

helped the control of infectious diseases that were once common in the UK e.g. polio, measles, rubella, tetanus
Big outbreaks of disease- called epidemics can be prevented if a large number of the population is vaccinated.
