What is IVF for?
To produce a baby for couples who are infertile.
What is the first step of IVF?
Stimulate follicles. Woman is given FSH and LH to stimulate the production of more eggs than normal in her ovaries.
What is the second step of IVF?
Extract oocytes. Eggs are collected, the woman is sedated through this but conscious.
What is the third step of IVF?
Collect sperm. Eggs are mixed with the father’s sperm in the lab for 16-20 hours. They are monitored microscopically for fertilisation.
What is the fourth step of IVF?
Fertilisation. Embryos are allowed to develop for 5 days. They will contain around 100 cells.
What is the fifth step of IVF?
Implantation. One or two embryos are selected and placed in mother’s uterus.
What happens if a cycle is unsuccessful?
A gap of 2 months is left before a repeat as it can be emotionally and physically stressful.
What is the impact of using FSH and LH?
More follicles produced to increase likelihood of fertilisation.
What disadvantages can more follicles give?
Multiple births.
What are 3 advantages of IVF?
Supports people who can’t have children.
Provides opportunity to use your own eggs if the Fallopian tube is blocked.
Donor eggs have a high success rate.
What are 3 disadvantages of IVF?
Expensive.
High chance of failure.
Multiple births is likely (20%-30%)
