Cell division - mitosis Flashcards
What is the cell cycle?
Where cells go through a series of changes involving growth and division.
What is it called when a cell divides into two identical cells?
Mitosis
Why does the body need cells to divide?
Growth, replacing worn out cells, repairing damaged tissue, asexual reproduction.
Why does the DNA replicate?
The genetic material is doubled as before a cell can divide it needs to grow and increase number of sub-cellular structures.
What is the first part of mitosis?
There is a parent cell with two pairs of chromosomes.
What is the second part of mitosis?
Each chromosome copies itself.
What is the third part of mitosis?
Chromosomes line up in middle, then split apart by a spindle fibre and the copies move to opposite poles.
What is the fourth part of mitosis?
The cell completely splits leaving two identical daughter cells.
What is a haploid cell?
Half number of chromosomes.
What is a diploid cell?
Full number of chromosomes, 23 pairs.
