Homeostasis GCSE Flashcards
What is the function of the nervous system?
Enables organisms to react to their surroundings and coordinates behaviour
what are two parts of the central nervous system?
Brain and spinal cord
why are reflex actions rapid and automatic?
They do not involve the conscious part of the brain
Why are reflex actions important?
For survival, and to prevent damage to the body
What are the pathway nervous system responses?
stimulus receptor, coordinator, effectors and response
what is a stimulus?
A change in the eternal external environment
what is a synapse
Junction between two neurons which chemicals are released following impulses across
what is the function of neurones ?
To carry electrical impulses around the body
What is homeostasis?
Maintenance of a constant internal environment
why is homeostasis important?
Maintains optimal conditions for and organ function and enszyme activity
Give three internal conditions, controlled and homeostasis
Water levels, blood glucose concentration, body temperature
Give three things that all control systems include
receptors, coordination, centres and effectors
Name, three coordination centres
Brain, spinal cord, pancreas
name, two types of effectors
muscles and glands
