Homeostasis Flashcards
Internal environment
Extracellular fluid - fluid around cells and tissues+blood plasma
Define homeostasis
The physio state of the body in which internal physical and chemical conditions are kept within a suitable range for life processes.
Body adjusts to fluctuating environ conditions, allowing it to main constant balance –> dynamic equilibrium
Interstitial fluid
Fluid surrounding cells
List examples of internal conditions whose balance is maintained
Temperature, chemical composition, pH
How might illness upset homeostasis
Render control system nonfunctional
Three components of homeostatic control system + their functions
- Monitor-sensors/receptors that receive stimulus+send msg
- Coordinating centre-an integrator that relays info to appropriate loc in body for response
- Regulator-An effector that executes response
Negative feedback + ex
Response that restores EQLM by reversing any changes made
Maintains homeostasis.
Ex. Temperature regulation
Positive feedback + ex
Response that acts to increase effect of change, intensifies change away from EQLM
Does not maintain homie o stasis
Ex. Child birth
Def Thermoregulation
Maintaining body temp within a narrow range around a set point
Two control mechanisms when body is hoooooooot ;)
1 sweating –> evaps and cools
2. Blood vessel dilation –> more flow to skin and loss of heat from skin
Three control mechanisms when it’s cooooool
- Vasoconstriction, less flow to skin, reduced heat loss
- Skeletal muscle contract, shivering generates E production
- Body hair erects to conserve heat
What causes heat stroke
Sweating for cooling is inefficient due to very high temp, humidity, andor exertion
Wilfred Bigelow’s two discoveries
- . Helped develop first artificial pacemaker
2. How to safely lower body need for O2 by lowering temp—> made open heart surgery possible
Cryogenics
Study of how materials behave at low temp
Examples of body responses during f or f
- Increased adrenaline level–>enhanced body fn
- Capillaries under skin surface close down->High blood pressure
- Rapid heart bumping
- Eyes dilate for better sight
- Useless functions shut down
