Why is the doctrine of the Holy Spirit important?
- personal importance in his on life
1. the Holy Spirit become the prominent member of the Trinity in the NT as He is the Presence of the triune God in Christians and in the church
2. Acts 2:17=18 Peter quoted the prophesy of Joel.. “in the last days” - the Holy Spirit will be poured out on all flesh
3. confusion of the Holy Spirit (Holy Spirit with pentecostal or carasmatic
4. Proper understanding of the Holy Spirit is crucial/critical for many things:
- salvation, grasp of assurance of salvation, perseverance (remain a Christian throughout our lives), sanctification (cannot mature in the Christian life apart from the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit), understanding Scripture, praying (Romans 8), understanding God’s will, exercising our spiritual gifts

divisions within evangelicalism
*Pentecostals/charismatics: first wave movement
3 points
- Believe that baptism by/with the Holy Spirit is a second blessing
- takes place subsequent to one’s conversion
- hears the gospel -> repent and believe -> at some point after this the Holy Spirit- Speaking in tongues in the necessary manifestation of the second blessing.
- when H.S. enters you (baptizes) you will begin speaking in tongues (language you have never studied or heard before)
- All the spiritual signs/gifts continue to be given by the H.S. today and should be common place in the church
- ex. prohpesy, speaking in tongues, interpretation of tongues, word of knowledge, word of wisdom, healings, and miracles… exercises
- Speaking in tongues in the necessary manifestation of the second blessing.
first wave movement
- Gave birth to new churches/ denominations - arrive from this theology - .....? - (1960s) the above (first wave) infiltrates all kinds of churches, ..........? - started at: Aunt arbor, Michigan -Sount Bent Indiana, Ducaine, Iowa - experience of the Holy Spirit. - (first wave) influence baptists, presbyterians, methodists, anglicans (they embraced this ......?)
Assembly of God
main line denominations
pentecostal theology
divisions within evangelicalism
*non-Pentecostals/charismatics: at the time of of a person conversion God baptizes that new believer with the H.S. (at the same time that he regenerates (not subsequent), justifies, adopts, unifies us with Christ, converts us
- no subsequent baptism of the Holy Spirit, but simultaneous with these other mighty acts of God
- Speaking in Tongues - does not necessarily result in speaking in tongues
- speaking in tongues is the at best the result of peer pressure or demonic activity - No miraculous sign gifts being assigned to the church today.
- does not mean that God cannot do miraculous activity (not through people who are gifted with these gifts)
- none of these gifts are being distributed by the Holy Spirit in the church today
- these gifts were reserved to the early church: bore testimony to the gospel, gospel messengers
- third wave evangelicals (1980s John Wember, Wayne Grudem, Sam Storms) …….?
- they believe that at the moment of conversion: ……?
- this experience is not necessary accompanied with speaking in tongues
- sign gifts …?
- embrace some of the theology of pentecostalism and reject others; take some of non-Pentecostals/charismatics
- baptism with or in the Holy Spirit takes places at conversion
- continue to be distributed today; should be common place within the church

What are the difficulties involved with the Holy Spirit?
- KJV - calls the third person of the Trinity - the Holy Ghost- not helpful because we think of casper; don’t use this expression
- ghost is frightfully close to spook (Karl Bart) not good for you or your congregation - do not use this expression - Holy Spirit identified as power - becomes some kind of impersonal force (the strength behind the Christians, the energy to dispense to others. he manifests himself in very powerful visible ways.. these do not help us see that the Holy Spirit is a perosn)
- the biblical speaking of the Holy Spirit is less frequent than God the Son and God the Father
- easy to grasp the nature of Father and Son, harder to grasp the nature of the Holy Spirit
the affirmation of Scripture of the Holy Spirit
