Holism Vs Reductionism Flashcards
Reductionism:
The idea that the nature of complex things can be reduced to the sum of more fundamental things.
E.g. when you realise you are starting to get a cold you think of a simple cause to this (someone sneezing of you) when in actual fact it’s probably a very complex explanation
Holism:
The idea that living matter and reality is made up of organic or unified wholes that are greater than the simple sum of their parts.Line of argument that is not always useful
Which study is most reductionist study?
Loftus and palmer (only looking at verbs and how that affects)
Bocchiaro perhaps?
(Biological and cognitive studies)
Which is the most holistic study?
Freud (considers many aspects of little Hans)
Individual differences, developmental, social studies
+/- of reductionist
- can pin point one specific reason and manipulate that
- ignores other factors than might be more effective
+/- holistic
- consider many different factors
- perhaps will struggle to find one affecting aspect amongst the many you’ve found
