first stage of HIV
Stage 1: Primary HIV Infection
lasts a few weeks.
Short flu-like illness
Diagnosis is often missed.
Large amount of HIV in peripheral blood, the immune system starts producing HIV antibody and cytotoxic lymphocytes.
stage 2 HIV
Stage 2: Clinically Asymptomatic stage
10 years.
No symptoms, maybe swollen glands.
Low level of HIV in blood , can infect
HIV antibodies are detectable in blood.
Virus is very active in lymph nodes and large amounts of T helper cells are infected and die and a large amount of virus is produced.
stage 3 HIV
Symptomatic HIV Infection
Body can’t contain infection anymore:
- Lymph nodes and tissues are damaged or burnt out.
- HIV mutates = becomes more pathogenic and kills more helper T-cells
- Body can’t replace destroyed helper T-cells.
first mild symptoms, become worse
stage 4 HIV
Stage 4: Progression from HIV to AIDS
- Immune system keeps worsening and illnesses that present become more severe.
- Diagnosis AIDS.
