Describe the conditions of Vimy Ridge and Canada’s involvement. Why is this event significant to Canada?
Vimy Ridge was an advantageous point within France. Was able to see in all directions. Was occupied and controlled by the Germans. Britain and France both attempted to take the hill but were unsuccessful. Canada was tasked with trying to conquer the ridge. For the first time in history all 4 regiments fought together. With the help of British officers and tacticians the Canadians planned an attack. They practiced on a replicate hill for weeks before the attack actually happened. The Canadians bombarded the hill with artillery for 3 days prior to advancing. They fired over a million shells. Then they advanced on the hill through the cover of a snowstorm. 4 days later the Canadians had taken the hill and accomplished what no other allies had done. Many view this event as a birth of a nation as it was the first time that all Canadian regiments fought together. They went up as provinces and came back as Canadians.
Why did the government decide to imprison enemy aliens during World War I?
