who were some of the main philosophers and what did they do (Thales, Socrates, PLato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Zeno)

A

Thales- father of philosophy, first to explain the universe and concluded that water was the original substance of all things

Socrates- didn’t write, developed Socratic Method, helped other seek truth and knowledge, put to death with hemlock poison bc they believed that he poisoned the minds of the youth

Plato- writes for Socrates, established the Academy, wrote the Republic, believed too much freedom leads to anarchy

Aristotle- tutor to Alex the Great, instilled to him a love for Greek culture, main theme “reality was in the physical world”, most known for logic which he made syllogism

Epicurus- happiness and pleasure is archived through avoiding pain/fear, argued that when a person dies then there’s nothing to fear

Zeno- the leader of the stoics, affairs of man and universe are ordered by fixed laws, happiness is achieved by duty and self-control

Pythagoras- concluded that the universe could be explained in mathematical terms, made Pythagorean Theorem

Hippocrates- father of medicine, taught every illness has a natural causes

Euclid- father of geometry, found a school in Alexandria, Egypt

Eratosthenes- father of geography

Archimedes- known for his many discoveries and developed the principle of levers
