Q

what did Rutherford discover and how?

A

The proton:
-he shot a beam of alpha particles through a thin sheet of gold as gold can be cut very thinly.
-some alpha particles travelled straight through, proving that particles are somewhat empty, some slightly deflected, showing that there’s a force that repels electrons showing that there is a positive centre, and some completely deflected showing the centre is hard and tiny.

Q

what Bhor discover and how?

A

Shells and energy levels:
-he realised that particles give certain amount of light every time they give off energy.
-therefore there must be set levels (shells) within the atom which the electrons jump between.
-he adjusted Rutherford’s model

Q

what did JJ Thompson discover and how?

A

The electron:
-he conducted an experiment where he shot a the. beam of particles through a high pressured tube that had different charges on each side.
-the beam of particles were attracted to the positive side meaning that the particles were negatively charged.
-he theorised that electrons were embedded in a cloud of positive charge (Plum pudding model)
