-alkali metals Flashcards
what are some physical properties of alkali metals? (4)
-conduct electricity
-soft
-shiny when freshly cut, tarnished after
-floats
what are some chemical properties of alkali metals? (1)
-very reactive (water, air, steam)
what is the reaction trend in alkali metals?
the lower down the group the more reactive they get.
Explain the reaction trend in alkali metals: (4)
The further down the group, the more reactive they become because they have more shells. This created more distance between the outer most electrons and the positive nucleus, so their electrostatic attraction weakens as shielding increases between successive shells. This results it being easier for those who have more shells in group 1 to lose an electron from their outer most shell and react.
when alkali metals react with water what would u mostly see? (5)
-flame
-it floats
-smoke
-bubbling
-it dissolves
Describe the boiling and melting point of alkali metals, why is this?
They have low boiling/ melting points and they become lower lower down the group. This is because their metric bond strength decreases as atom size increases.
What is made when alkalis react with water?
Metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas
What happens when lithium reacts with water?
fizzes, floats, dissolves.
What happens when sodium reacts with water?
fizzes, floats, dissolves, glows.
What happens when potassium reacts with water?
fizzes, floats, dissolves, burns a lilac flame.
