Q

Explain the strength of a giant ionic lattice:

A

A giant ionic lattice requires lots of energy to break as its ionic bonds are very strong as well as its electrostatic forces between compounds therefore ionic compounds have high melting ad boiling points.

Q

Why is seawater a better electricity conductor than fresh water?

A

Seawater contains salt (NaCl) which is an ionic compound which is dissolved in water. This allows the Na and Cl ions to freely move around meaning they can carry electricity.

Q

What are intermolecular forces?

A

The forces between covalent compounds which are often very weak though covenant bonds are very strong.

Q

Describe the relationship between intermolecular forces and the size of the molecule:

A

The bigger the covalent molecule the bigger the intermolecular force.

9
Q

When a covalent structure increase in size what special properties does it gain?

A

Stronger intermolecular forces meaning that they have higher melting and boiling points. They become insoluble, hard and worse conductors.
