A

Good defense is one reason a settlement might succeed. An example is that St. Augustine had a good military base because the architecture was really good which helped them win a bunch of attacks against pirates.
Having a good profit is one reason a settlement might succeed. An example is that Jamestown had a good profit from tobacco because everyone loved it, which made Jamestown have more money.

A

Having a good location is one reason why a settlement might succeed. Fort Caroline had a muddy location because it was on the mouth of the St. Johns river which didn’t help them grow crops.
Quilombos Palmares’ last leader, Zumbi, is killed by the Portuguese because they wanted control over the slaves which made Palmares lose slaves.
