Rhyme
Words that have the same ending sound
Onomatopoeia
Words that sound like the objects or actions they refer to
Rhyme Scheme
Regular pattern of words that END with the same sound
Repetition
Repeating the same words, lines or stanzas
Rhythm
Regular, repeated pattern of sounds, or beats
Stanza
A group of lines in a poem; a ‘paragraph’
Narrative Poem
A poem that tells a story
Hyperbole
An exaggeration
Figurative Language
All language that used word pictures to compare or describe things. Includes similes, metaphors, hyperbole, and more.
Metaphor
A figure of speech in which things are compared by stating that one thing IS another
Imagery
Description that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste)
Simile
A figure of speech in which things are compared using the words “like” or “as”
Alliteration
Repetition of words with the same BEGINNING sounds
Personification
A figure of speech in which objects are given human qualities
Free Verse
Poetry NOT written in rhyme or meter.
