Battle of Shiloh (Corinth MS)
grants forces were advancing to MS. Johnston knew that general Buell was coming to help grant. Johnston surprised grants forces at Shiloh Church and created a 6 mile long battlefield. Buells forces sit showed up in the middle of the night and the next day the Union forces counter attacked and defeated Johnstons forces. Shiloh was one of the bloodiest battles to take place on the American continent at that time
Mississippi ports
north takes possession of important southern ports, leaving only Vicksburg MS and Port Hudson LO the south is almost officially broken in two
CSS Merimack vs. USD Monitor
the CSS Merrimack was the first design. These the ships made the wooden naives of the world obsolete neither ship was unable to do damage to each other.
The Peninsular campaign (Yorktown VA)

Second Bull Run/ Second Manassas
Lincoln turns the army of the potomac over in the Gen John Pope. Lee divides his forces again, leaving ‘Stonewall’ Jackson in charge of catching up to Pope. Pope engages Jackson at Manassas not knowing that Lee was right behind him. Lee combined forces with Jackson and battled the Union, winning for the second time at Manassas.
Battle of Antietam
Sept 17, 1862 Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Confederate forces invaded the North in hope of gaining European support. The army learned of General Lee’s strategy. Lee retreated back into VA and the battle known as the bloodiest day of the Civil War.
Battle of Fort Wagner
54th Massachusetts- All African American regiment. The regiments charge across a narrow spit of sand cost it nearly half its men. Sgt. William Carney, a survivor, earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. Many African Americans viewed the chance to fight against slavery as a milestone in their history.
Battle of Fredericksburg
Burnside crossed right in front of Lee’s army by boat; Union kept charging directly into Confederacy forces. Casualties: Union= 13,000/Confederacy=5,000
Battle of Chancellorsville
Lee split his army and sent Jackson around to attack through the cover of woods; surprised Hooker; Jackson died after the battle due to friendly fired.
Siege of Vicksburg
Union army laid siege to Vicksburg, forcing inhabitants to make homes in the foothills and scavenge for food. Confederate army surrendered after round the clock bombardment resulting in the completion of the Anaconda plan.
