History (Christianity pg. 17) Flashcards
where did christianity spread from?
the religion christianity slowly spread from Israel to some parts of Asia and North Africa and finally reached Rome itself.
why did christianity spread *
it was popular within working people, slaves and women at first. This is because many of the religions of the time did not allow women or slaves to take part. christianity gave ordinary people a hope of a better life after death. it also taught them how they should behave with one another. most other roman religions were just concerned with ceremonies
what did the christians do about the danger of persecution *
because of this, they had secret signs which let them know who else was a christian. for example, one sign was a drawing of a fish.
what law did emperor Constantine make *
in AD 312 he passed a law that stopped the persecution of christians. Later, he became a christian himself and christianity became the state religion of the roman empire.
what happened in 5th century AD
many ppl all over western europe had become christian
Constantiople is now ______
the city of Istanbul in Turkey
how many Roman empires were there in AD 330 and what were they
There were two - the East (with its capital as constantiople) and the west (with its capital as rome)
what was the quarrel between the two churches
the churches in the two halves of the empire had slightly different ideas, though christians in the eastern empire agreed that the pope in rome was their head. these differences grew bigger until they split in AD 1000. The church in the east became the orthodox church whilst the one in the west remained the catholic church under pope.
What happened from about AD 400 onwards
many barbarian tribes from the east conquered britain, germany, france, italy and spain. all of them worshipped different and often very fierce gods. then the roman empire was broken up into many separate countries each with its own king and religion
what happened in AD 768 *
Charlemagne became the king of the Franks. he coquered modern France, Belgium, Holland, northern Italy, and large parts of Germany and Austria. He called this the holy Roman empire. In AD 800, he asked the Pope to crown him emperor which was very important to show his respect towards the Pope, his power and position. (very high compared to Charlemagne)
what were the dark ages *
Europe was conquered by the Barbarians in the 4th to 6th centuries. They were fierce, wild people Almost none of them could read or writr. They settled down in small villages and lived rough, very hard lives. For centuries they did not have towns, They did not know about the civilization of Rome.
