surma - kushiyara - meghna river system

A
  • longest inside bangladesh
  • the meghna originates in the hills of shillong, in India as the river Barak
  • the Barak splits into two streams right before entering bangladesh through sylhet
  • the northern stream being the surma and the southern kushiyara.
    -these two streams meet again later and take the name Meghna
  • the Meghna then flows south to meet the padma at chandpur before flowing towards the Bay of Bengal, splitting into many streams of various sizes.

  • The main river in the south eastern region is the karnaphuli. it originates in the lushai hills in india and enters bangladesh to flow through rangamati, going rapidly downhill to reach the bay of bengal.
  • The kaptai dam, built on this river at Kaptai is the only hydroelectric power plant in bangladesh
  • the country’s largest and main sea port, the Chittagong port is on the bank of the Karnaphuli

A

The Sangu originates in the hills of arakan in myanmar and enters bangladesh through bandarban and flows west to fall into the bay of bengal
