Histology of Epithelial Tissues Flashcards

1
Q

2 types of epithelial tissue

Q

Different shapes of cells

A
  • Cuboidal = round, cube shaped

Q

Exceptions to typical classification of epithelial tissue

A
  • Pseudostratified = appears to have multiple layers, but all cells attach to basement membrane
  • Transitional = top layer of cells can change shape

Q

Different sides of an epithelial cell and what they do

A
  • Apical side = specialisations (eg. microvilli)
  • Basal side = anchors cell to basement membrane, allows nutrients and innervation
  • Lateral side = connects cells by cell to cell junctions

Q

Types of cell junction

A
  • Tight junction (zonula occludens)
  • Adherens junction (zonula adherens)
  • Communicating junction (gap junctions)
  • Desmosome

Q

What is keratinisation?

A
  • Excess keratin production in cells
  • Cells die and leave keratin behind
  • Keratin forms a protective layer (waterproof)
