Control of Cell Differentiation Flashcards
Stages of cell differentiation
- Stem cell
- Progenitor
- Terminally differentiated cell
Types of cell potency
- Pluripotency
- Multipotency
- Unipotency
What is a pluripotent cell?
Can become any cell in the body
What is a multipotent cell?
Can become a more limited number of cells than pluripotent
What is a unipotent cell?
Has reached final form and won’t change again
What proteins make cells different from eachother?
- Proteins defining cell-type features
- Metabolic proteins
- Structural proteins
- Regulatory proteins
What are the different stages of cell differentiation controlled by?
Different transcription factors
2 domains on a transcription factor
- DNA binding domain
- Activation domain
What does the DNA binding domain do?
Attaches transcription factor to the promoter/enhancer
What does the activation domain do?
Interact with RNA polymerase
What do extracellular signals allow?
Cells to expand and differentiate
What can deregulated differentiation cause?
Disease (eg. leukaemia caused by no B cell production)
