Histology Flashcards
What type of epithelium in the larger ducts
Columnar
What type of epithelium in the secretory acini?
Cuboidal/low columnar
What epithelium covers the nipple?
What tissues make up the nipple?
- stratified squamous covers it
- made of smooth muscle and connective tissue
What is merocrine secretion?
The proteins in milk are made in the rER, packaged in the Golgi apparatus and secreted via vesicles (v) which merge with the apical membrane to release only their contents into the duct system
What is apocrine secretion?
Part of the membrane is lost when it buds off e.g.
Lipid droplets (L) can be seen within these secreting cells of two adjacent mammary acini. L1 is just about to bud off, surrounded by membrane and carrying a small amount of cytoplasm with it. L2 has just been released – note the
Percentage of water in human milk
88%
Percentage of protein in human milk?
1.5%
Percentage of carbohydrate in human milk?
7% (mainly lactose)
Main carbohydrate in human milk?
Lactose
Percentage of lipid in human milk?
3.5%
Changes in mammary gland in 1st trimester
-ducts elongate and branch
-epithelial cells proliferate
myoepithelial cells proliferate
Changes in mammary gland in 2nd trimester
- gland tissue develops and the secretory alveoli differentiate
- plasma cells and lymphocytes invade the connective tissue
Changes in mammary gland in 3rd trimester?
- secretori alveoli continue to mature
- rER develops
