Histology Flashcards
what are the four types of tissue
epithelial, connective, muscle and neural
what are the primary characteristics of epithelial tissues
cellularity, polarity, attachment to basal lamina, vascularity, regeneration, layered
function of epithelial tissues
physical protection, permeability control, sensation, secretion
explain what simple epithelium is
single layered
explain what stratified epithelium is
several layers
explain what squamous epithelia is
irregular shaped
explain what cuboid epithelia is
cube shaped
explain what transitional epithelia is
capable of changing shape
explain what columnar epithelia is
column shaped
connective tissue is comprised of 3 main components
specialised cells, extracellular protein fibres, ground substance.
connective tissue can be divided into which three types
connective tissue proper, fluid connective, supporting connective tissue
what are the 2 sub categories of connective tissue proper
loose - loose open framework (fat, areolar tissue)
dense - densely packed fibres (tendons, ligaments)
what are the 2 sub categories of fluid connective tissue
blood, lymph
what are the sub categories of supporting connective tissue? MATRIX!!!
bone, cartilage.
what group of cells are wandering cells part of?
WBC
what are the three types of fibres in connective tissue?
collagen fibers ( provide tensile strength)
reticular fibers (run in different directions)
elastic fibers
what does loose connective tissue form?
binding, packing material
fascia and sheaths
what are the primary characteristics of dense connective tissue>
dense collagen fibers arranged parallel to direction of force
strong and flexible
white and silvery
what are the primary characteristic of supporting connective tissue
few cells, high amount of fibre, inorganic calcium salts
what are the 3 types of cartilage and what are their purposes
hyaline cartilage
- reduces friction
- stiff and flexible support
- common cartilage
fibrous cartilage
-resists compression
-prevents bone-bone contact
-limits movement.
elastic cartilage
-support
-can be distorted without permanent damage
-returns to original shape.
what are membranes composed of?
epithelial and connective tissue.
what are the main types of membranes
mucous, serous, cutaneous, synovial.
what are mucous membranes
wet, and exchange with exteriors
serous membranes
lines ventral body cavities
cutaneous membranes
thick,dry and water resistant (skin!!!)
