Histology Flashcards
What is the structure of extrapulmonary tubes (outside lung)?
Mucosa
Submucosa
Smooth muscle
Cartilage
Adventitia
What is the mucosa comprised of?
Two layers:
Respiratory epithelium
Lamina propria (thin loose connective tissue)
What type of cartilage is found in the respiratory tract?
Hyaline
Which connective tissue fibre predominates in the respiratory tract?
Elastic
What type of muscle fibre is found in the respiratory tract?
Smooth muscle
What are three cell types found in the epithelial layer?
Cilia cells
Basal cells
Goblet cells
What type of epithelium is respiratory epithelium?
Pseudostratified
What are cilia cells?
Small hair like structures projecting from the epithelial cell surface into the lumen
What substance is secreted by glands in the submucosa?
serous mucosa
In which layer of the trachea are secretory glands found?
Mucous layer
What two substances do the trachea secretory glands secrete?
Watery secretion rich in bactericidal enzymes
Thicker substance rich in glycosylated proteins
Describe the histology of bronchioles?
No cartilage or glands
Some cilia and goblet cells but a lot less
Decreased smooth muscle
Epithelium = low columnar or cuboidal
Greater elastic tissue
What substance do bronchiole cells secrete?
Possess cells that secrete surfactant
What are surfactant secreting cells called?
Clara cells
What type of epithelium is found in bronchioles?
Simple columnar merging to cuboidal
