Histology Flashcards
Tissues
1
Q
4 Primary Tissue Types
A
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscle
- Nervous
2
Q
2 criteria for epithelial tissue
A
- What shape are the cells?
- squamous
- cuboidal
- columnar
- How many layers
Exception: simple squamous epithelial tissue
3
Q
Extracellular Matrix
A
- extracellular protein fibers
- ground substance - syrup like fluid
- ECF
- Interstitial fluid
- Tissue fluid
- tissues-cells and extracellular matrix (fibers and ground substance)
4
Q
Epitheleal Tissue characteristics
A
- covers surfaces inside and out; glands
- secretion and absorption
- many tightly packed cells, joined by various junction types
- usually arranged in layers, with apical, & basal (except glands
- attached to basement membrane
- avascular (rely on diffusion)
- high mitotic rate
5
Q
Apical (free) surface
A
Part of a cell’s surface that is exposed to a body cavity, an organ lumen, or exterior of body
6
Q
Basal surface
A
Adheres to underlying Connective Tissue by the Basement Membrane
7
Q
Epitheleal Tissue functions
A
- Protection: dehydration, abrasion, chemical & biological agents
- Selective Permeability: regulates passage of substances in & out of body (ex - absorption)
- Secretion: exocrine, endocrine, goblet cells
- Sensation: nerve endings for temperature & pain, ex - epithelium of skin
8
Q
Epithelial Tissue - Intercellular Junctions
A
- Cell junctions are contact points between the plasma membranes
- Join lateral surfaces of adjacent cells
- 4 types:
- tight junctions
- adhering to junctions
- Desmosomes
- Gap Junctions
9
Q
Special Characteristics of Epithelia (Epithelium layer)
A
- Cilia-propel
- microvilli-absorb
- apical region of an epithelial cell
- Cell Junctions
- Tight junction
- Adhesive Belt
- Desmosome
- Gap Junction
- basal region
Connective Tissue
- Basement Membrane
- Basal lamina
- Reticular Fibers
- Nerve ending
- Capillary
