What are the precautions after surgery?
do not pivot or twist operated leg medication to prevent blood clots pain swelling: important to have contraction in the calves as a result flexion no more than 90 degrees no internal rotation past neutral no adduction past midline
6 weeks post surgery
surgeon tells the patient whether or not they are allowed full ROM at the hip, full weight bearing without device and driving
Hemiarthroplasty
one part of the hip joint is replaced, usually the ball
weak hip muscles as a result so the hip is much more likely to become dislocated
Precautions of a hemiarthroplasty
do not bend past 90 degrees
don’t bring operated leg across the midline
do not twist when standing or sitting
Intramedullarly nail
a metal rod is inserted into the femur while the fracture heals
Total hip replacement
the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and replaced with a prosthesis
femoral head- replaced with a metal rod
metal or ceramic ball
metal socket for the cartilage
Total hip replacement precautions
do not flex 90 degrees
do not cross legs when sitting, standing or lying down
