- Venous stasis
- Hypercoagulation- altered blood consistency
- Vascular/endothelial injury

- DVT: pain/swelling in calf (not reliable for diagnosis)
- PE: chest pain, dysnopea, tachynopea, fever, hypoxaemia
- *use clinical reasoning to determine whether mobilisation will aid or progress DVT
