Origin:
* Ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line
* Dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx
* Sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion:
* Upper fibers: Posterior part of the iliotibial tract and the tensor fascia latae muscle
* Lower fibers: Gluteal tuberosity of the proximal femur
Innervation
* Inferior gluteal nerve
Gluteus medius IO Innervation
Origin:
* External surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
Insertion:
* Lateral surface of the greater trochanter of the femur
Innervation
* Superior gluteal nerve
Gluteal Maximus Action
- Extension of femur at hip joint
- Lateral rotation of femur at hip joint
- Assists in rising from sitting position
Gluteus minimus IO Innervation Action
Origin:
* External surface of ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines
Insertion:
* Anterolateral ridge on greater trochanter of the femur
Innervation:
Superior gluteal nerve
Action:
Abduct of femur at hip joint
Medial rotation of femur at hip joint
Tensor fasciae latae IO Action Innervation
Origin:
* Lateral aspect of iliac crest between iliac tubercle and anterior superior iliac spine
Insertion:
* Iliotibial tract
Action
* Abduct of femur at hip joint
* Medial rotation of femur at hip joint
* Flexion of femur at hip joint
* Extension of leg at knee joint
Innervation
* Superior gluteal nerve
Piriformis IO Action Innervation
Origin:
* Anterior surface of sacrum between anterior sacral foramina
Insertion:
* Medial side of superior border of the greater trochanter of the femur
Action
* Lateral rotation of hip when it is extended
* Abduction of hip when it is flexed
Innervation
* Posterior rami of S1 and S2 spinal nerves

Origin:
* Inner surface of obturator membrane
* Margin of the obturator foramen
Insertion:
* Medial surface of the greater trochanter of the femur above the trochanteric fossa

* Lateral rotation hip when it is extended
* Abduction of hip when it is flexed
Innervation
* Nerve to obturator internus
Superior gemellus IO Action Innervation
Origin:
* External surface of ischial spine
Insertion:
* Medial surface of the greater trochanter with the obturator internus tendon

* Lateral rotation hip when it is extended
* Abduction of hip when it is flexed

* Nerve to obturator internus
Inferior gemellus IO Action Innervation
Origin:
* Upper aspect of ischial tuberosity
Insertion:
* Medial surface of the greater trochanter with the obturator internus tendon

* Nerve to quadratus femoris

Origin:
* Lateral border of the ischial tuberosity
Insertion:
* Quadrate tubercle on the intertrochanteric crest of the femur

* Lateral rotation hip when it is extended
* Abduction of hip when it is flexed
